Our Research

We welcome, value, and integrate various basic, clinical, and surgical disciplines, bringing together academic expertise with that of the IRCCS of Bologna.

Since its establishment, DIBINEM has enhanced the potential of the biomedical, medical, and healthcare areas within its scope, and strengthened its educational and clinical-care functions, without neglecting the social impact of its activities.

The department has brought together academic expertise with that of the IRCCS of Bologna; together they collaborate and coordinate to unite their missions and visions, thereby strengthening one another and better achieving their common goals.

Scientific and healthcare activities take place at the biomedical research laboratories located within the Institutes of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Physiology, and Hygiene, the Dental and Psychiatric Clinics, and the three IRCCS of Bologna.

Interdisciplinarity, participation, and integration have always been our core objectives, to which innovation and sustainability have been added over the years.

The developed research lines have produced translational project ideas with a high innovative impact, which have made it possible to obtain significant funding from competitive calls. These projects have been carried out within research consortia inside the European Union, in the context of the PNRR (MNESYS; HEAL ITALIA; AGE-IT, CN-mRNA) and PNC (DARE), and within the framework of ministerial funding (Ministry of University and Research, Ministry of Health, Italian Space Agency).

We are committed to synergistic actions in competitive project design, promoting common rules and practices to support biomedical and translational research through the sharing of data, tools, and platforms, and the integrated management of personnel. The Department is also involved in the design of the "Torre Biomedica" (Biomedical Tower), dedicated to hosting DIBINEM researchers and professors within the Sant'Orsola Polyclinic area, fostering the integration of biomedical and clinical researchers from numerous fields.

Research Areas and Groups

Research Center for Precision Medicine

The Research Center develops processes and products for personalized therapies using 3D cell culture techniques (spheroids, organoids), microfluidics, microbioreactors, synthesis and functionalization of implant materials, bioprinting, advanced bioimaging, and AI. The Center also carries out training activities. The activities take place within the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, Research, Innovation & Technology Department, with a view to synergy and the enhancement of expertise.
